Estonian Kevelt to produce millions of euros' worth of cancer drug under Pharmsynthez |
|
|
BNS − The Russian pharmaceutical company Pharmsynthez controlled by an Estonian company has acquired the Estonian pharmaceuticals producer Kevelt that expects to produce close to eight million euros' worth of a new cancer drug, Virexxa, for the European Union market in 2015.
Pharmsynthez produces medicines and active pharmaceutical ingredients in one of Russia's most modern research and production facilities built in cooperation with St. Petersburg researchers and the German technology group Linde AG which meets EU requirements, Erik Haavamae, member of the board of the holding company AS Ephag that controls the Russian company, told BNS. Its product portfolio at present includes well-known brands like Sehydrin, Neovir, Pencrofton and Fenazid used in oncology and gynecology and treatment of immunodeficiencies and tuberculosis.
"Pharmsynthez sees in the Estonian drug maker Kevelt an opportunity to expand to foreign markets," Haavamae said. The largest private shareholder and chairman of the board of directors of Pharmsynthez, Dmitry Genkin, told Russian news agency Interfax last week that the acquisition of Kevelt will open up direct access to European pharmaceutical markets adding that the transaction fully corresponds to Pharmsynthez's development strategy. Interfax said the production of the drug Virexxa will take place at Kevelt based at the Tallinn technology park Tehnopol.
Chemists Nigulas Samel and Ivar Jarving have for years been the driving force behind Kevelt that started manufacturing pharmaceuticals in 1996. Haavamae said the pair will remain at the helm also under Pharmsynthez. Kevelt produces at present preparations such as Prostenoon Gel for inducing labor, the glaucoma drug Glaumax, pure biochemicals for research, and freezing solutions and systems of stem and cord blood cells.
Last fall Pharmsynthez had its shares listed on the MICEX exchange in Moscow, raising 528 million roubles in the initial offering which Haavamae said it intends to use to expand its sales network, buy bio-pharmaceutical companies abroad, increase production capacity and develop innovative drugs.
The company has seven novel pharmaceuticals in the pipeline of which Virexxa is one of the most promising in terms of sales after the multiple sclerosis drug MyeloXEN. Virexxa, which is at present in the second phase of clinical trials, is expected to generate sales of 207 million roubles on the EU market in 2015. Haavamae said Virexxa has been categorized as an Orphan Drug which makes for a more cost-effective phase of clinical trials and allows the medication to be registered on different markets.
Pharmsynthez expects its sales to increase to 350 million roubles by 2012 and reach 405 million roubles by 2013. Last year it probably surpassed sales and profit forecasts which were 271.6 million roubles and 28 million roubles, respectively. In 2009 the company's sales were 228.4 million roubles, up by 15.7 percent year-on-year.
Kevelt meanwhile saw sales nearly triple to 15.7 million kroons (EUR 1 mln) in 2009 compared to 2008 and its profit was slightly below one million kroons.
Ephag owns 69.3 percent of Pharmsynthez. The holding company in turn is 75 percent owned by Amber Trust II, a fund set up to invest in the Baltic states and Russia that manages assets worth 150 million euros. |

Elme Messer Gaas to build gas plant near Estonia's Narva |
|
|
BNS – Elme Messer Gaas will build a gas plant in Auvere near the city of Narva in northeastern Estonia to start producing oxygen, nitrogen and argon for industrial purposes in 2012.
Elme Messer Gaas and the national power company Eesti Energia said the plant will be built as part of an agreement according to which Elme Messer Gaas will start supplying the oil industry operation of the power company, Eesti Energia Olitoostus, with nitrogen necessary for the production of shale oil.
In addition, the gas company will start producing liquefied oxygen, nitrogen and argon for trading. The plant will allow it to produce up to 80 million cubic meters of industrial gases annually.
"The agreement with Elme Messer Gaas will ensure us a long-term supply of nitrogen we need for production which the Enefit-280 technology requires in bigger quantities than other technologies used for the production of shale oil," Eesti Energia Olitoostus CEO Igor Kond explained. "It was important to us to find a partner who would be prepared to invest in the project and offer us the service at optimum cost."
Elme Messer Gaas chief Raimond Morgenson said collaboration with Eesti Energia Olitoostus is important to the company not only because of building a unique production complex but also because of the opportunity to implement a project that will enable it to achieve product supply independence. "The plant will allow us to cover the need of industrial gases in the Baltic states and enter new markets including northwestern Russia," he said.
Morgenson said Elme Messer Gaas will invest around 30 million euros in northeastern Estonia in the coming years and create many permanent jobs. |

Estonian Company Receives US Patent for Supercapacitor Material |
|
|
ERR - A new energy-storing material for supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries, developed by the Tartu company Skeleton Technologies, has received a patent in the United States. The new supercapacitors are made of a new nonporous carbide-derived carbon that has a much greater energy density than commercially available ones, and have undergone the first successful trials. The technology could potentially be used by a range of sectors from the automotive industry to defense contracting, and General Motors has expressed interest. The inventors are Skeleton Technologies researchers Dr. Jaan Leis, Dr. Mati Arulepp, Dr. Marko Lätt and Helle Kuura. “A problem experienced today with capacitors is the low energy densities and power densities. The mass-produced supercondensers are too big and heavy for many uses, and also expensive due to high material cost," said Leis.

Experts: positive changes in Estonian economy set to continue |
|
|
BNS – The positive changes in the Estonian economy that started more than a year ago will continue also in the first half of 2011, a panel of experts at the Estonian Institute of Economic Research believes.
In December 67 percent of the experts forecast that after six months the overall situation of the economy will be better and 33 believed that it will be about the same as at the time of the survey. No one predicted that the situation will deteriorate.
Leev Kuum, senior researcher at the institute, said at a press conference at the Ministry of Economy and Communications on Wednesday that expectations as regards continuation of development are persistently high, relying on private consumption and investment.
The Estonian business climate index calculated using the methodology of the Ifo Institute for Economic Research at the University of Munich climbed from 5.7 percent in September to 6.0 percent in December on the back of improvement in the current situation and strengthening of positive expectations. The average index for the 27 member states of the EU in October was 5.25 points.
Kuum observed that experts' opinions as regards the situation of the Estonian economy kept improving during the whole of 2010. He also said that the post-crisis rise of the Estonian economy may already be considered sustainable based on statistical indicators for the final quarter of 2010.
The Estonian Institute of Economic Research forecasts a gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 4.5 percent and an inflation rate of 3.5 percent for Estonia for 2011. The average monthly wage for the whole year is estimated to be 815 euros and real wages are seen to grow 0.3 percent. Exports of goods are estimated to reach 9.2 billion euros and imports 10 billion euros, while banks' home loan portfolio is estimated to total 15 billion euros at year-end.
The panel of experts saw high unemployment, related reduction in demand and insufficient international competitiveness as hindering Estonia's economic development the most in December. |

Goodbye Kroon, Hello Euro |
|
|
ERR - As the clocks struck twelve marking the arrival of the new year, Estonia bid fond farewell to its national currency, the kroon, becoming the 17th country to join the Eurozone. Both currencies will be accepted in tandem over the course of a 14-day transition period, however shops, restaurants and other businesses must give change only in euros during that time.
The occasion was marked in Tallinn with a celebratory, outdoor concert on Theater Square. Shortly after midnight Prime Minister Andrus Ansip ceremonially withdrew his first euro notes from a cash machine at the event.
At a press conference held the afternoon prior to the changeover, Ansip reiterated his opinion that a speedy adoption of the euro was necessary to calm the fears of foreign investors who have been reluctant to deal with Estonia due to concerns over devaluation.

Silicon to Silicone: E-Paper Reaches Prototype Stage |
|
|
ERR - An Estonian company is kindling interest after developing a prototype for what could be the world's first e-paper.The silicone-based technology is the result of several years of research at Visitret Displays.
The non-reflective sheets do not use electricity, they are weatherproof and non-breakable and can also play back high-quality video images, wrote Eesti Päevaleht.
Producing the e-paper is inexpensive and the technology could come in handy for one of the primary materials for screens, potentially making laptops and other currently LCD-display-equipped gadgets much less expensive. It could conceivably also replace metal traffic signs, books and newspapers and even printed price labels in stores.

Estonians set up real estate portal aiming to become China's largest |
|
|
BNS − Estonian businessmen have established a real estate portal called maimaikuai.com on the Chinese market that is looking for investors to become the largest nationwide portal, the Postimees daily says.
According to last week's data the portal carried 450,000 ads and its database embraced 6,000 brokers. "Maimai kuai" is Chinese for "purchase-sale quickly."
"Initially we'd like to get together two million ads from the capitals of the 22 Chinese provinces. It's especially important for the ads to be from as many cities throughout China as possible," Urmas Koiv, one of the initiators of the website, told the paper. In his words, the usual practice in China is for a real estate portal to focus on one concrete area or one real estate company.
The portal is being developed by Estonians who also are its core investors. The marketing communication and website translations are done by the Chinese.
Koiv said the first marketing campaigns need an investment of 500,000-700,000 euros. The company is at present actively looking for an international investor. Maimaikuai plans to advertise in addition to China in Europe and America to attract international visitors. |

University Develops 3D Microchips for Mass Production |
|
|
ERR - Researchers at the Tallinn University of Technology are working with IBM and Ericsson to create three-dimensional electronic chips for mass production. The 3.8-million-euro EU project called Diamond is developing the next step in computer technology. Electronic microchips, which are currently placed side by side, would in the future be stacked on top of one another to give added functionality to computers and cellular phones. Scientists can already do this, but as university researcher Jaan Raik told ETV, "the entire technology is very unstable."
He explained that the various building blocks have become so tiny - and yet so complex - that the loss of a single atom may cause a device to malfunction. This makes the existing solutions very vulnerable to environmental changes. |
