ERR News - The University of Tartu is buying a new gene sequencing system, Illumina HiSeq 2000, which is capable of sorting a person's genome in just a week.
Until now, the university's genetic analysis lab was equipped with the Illumina iScan, which can process 1 million of the most important DNA characters. The new apparatus can decode a human genome from beginning to end, about 3 billion characters.
Purchasing the new apparatus will cost 1.3 million euros, which is largely supported by EU infrastructure funds.
Vice Rector Kristjan Haller said the University of Tartu has made significant contributions to the development of genetic studies since the appropriation of Estonian Genome Center.
