Foreign companies move their backoffices to Estonia

BBN - More and more foreign companies are discovering Estonia as a provider of share services functions, writes Äripäev.

So far foreign companies have transferred to Estonia mainly production jobs because of cheaper prices, but now also whitecollar jobs are moving to Estonia, with one IT company going to to move its backoffice operations to Estonia later this year.

When choosing a location for its financial centre for shared services, Estonia was on top of the list for the Finnish manufacturer of lifting equipment Konecranes.

„We found that Konecranes as a Finnish company and Estonians were culturally a match,” explained Peter Klingebiel, head of the company’s financial support service centre.

„Estonians are well qualified and there is potential for cost-saving,” he added.

Elcoteq to Produce Medical Equipment, Expand Workforce

ERR - Elcoteq Tallinn, the electronic components manufacturer aquired last month by the French company Eolane, will expand its production range to include medical equipment, its new owners have said.

Eolane chief executive Marc Pasquier said that the change would mean expanding staff numbers, which currently stand at 235, Äripäev reported.

In 2009, Elcoteq Eesti managed one of the most talked-about business deals in Estonia, selling 80 percent of its production capacity to Swedish-based Ericsson. Its future was thrown into doubt last October, however, when its parent company, Elcoteq SE filed for bankruptcy in its country of domicile, Luxembourg.

2011 GDP Growth Figure Bumped Up to 7.6%

ERR - Revised figures released today by Statistics Estonia have pegged the nation's 2011 GDP growth at 7.6 percent, up slightly from the 7.5 percent that it announced a month ago based on flash estimates.

The first three quarters of the year were characterized by high growth rate, mainly driven by a revving up of the manufacturing sector, followed by an abrupt slowdown that led to the first quarter-to-quarter contraction seen since early 2010.

However, the new numbers indicate that the fourth quarter drop wasn't quite so dramatic as initially believed, with GDP shrinking by just 0.2 percent compared with the 0.8 percent first calculated. Quarterly GDP at current prices came in at 4.22 billion euros, a 4.5 percent increase year-on-year.

Escape From Norway

ERR - “Norway has the highest salaries in the world,” says ICD Industries CEO, Christian Testman. “And this is not sustainable.” And so Testman has brought ICD to Estonia.

ICD Industries is in the control software business, their control design platform software (CDP) providing frameworks for their clients to develop, test, simulate and operate advanced control applications – “control” being what happens between a switch on one end and a physical action on the other.

Rolls Royce is a client. ICD’s products enable the creation of software to guide dynamic positioning, an intermediary system between a satellite signal and the thrusters on seagoing vessels which keep an offshore supply vessel in place in deep water. Also, ICD’s motion compensated products serve to align a heeling ship’s helipad with helicopter struts, permitting a safe landing in tossing seas. Or 3D real-time graphics, which allow a ship owner to experiment with crane placement with the ease of drag and drop technologies – before spending the 200 million euros necessary to build the ship.

“We make the toolbox to build the control tool,” explains Testman. “We build software to help other companies build their software.” And given ICD’s Norwegian roots, many of those products are benefitting from what Testman terms “the exponential growth in oil and gas drilling in the maritime sector.”

With a modest budget of 20 million euros this year, ICD employs only 50 people in Norway, and Testman has identified Estonia as a place which can help ICD’s growth through the outsourcing of programming resources.

DPD opens EUR 2 mln parcel terminal in Estonia

BNS – The DPD Eesti courier company on Friday opened a new logistics center in the Juri technology park to the south of the Estonian capital Tallinn for an investment of approximately two million euros.

The existing DPD Eesti terminal in Tallinn has a sorting capacity of 2,000 to 2,400 parcels per hour, compared with the new terminal's hourly capacity of up to 4,500 parcels. The gross area of DPD's new terminal is 2,039 square meters, about as much as of the old terminal, with an additional 822.2 square meters of office space.

The new sorting line requires a smaller number of personnel. The workers to become redundant as a result will be employed in other duties, managers of DPD Eesti told reporters on Friday.

The property of the new terminal belongs to United Investors, from which DPD rents the building for a period of up to 15 years.

DPD Eesti, a company of the international Geopost group, handled approximately 2.2 million parcels during 2011, 19 percent more than in 2010. By the year 2014 that figure is estimated to rise to 2.5 million and by the year 2020 to 3.6 million.

The manager of DPD Eesti, Tarmo Tael, said DPD has a market share of roughly 30 percent in Estonia at this point and it is seen to stay at that level in the future. Growth in the volume of parcels rather depends on economic growth than livening of international online trade, he added.

Tael said that according to forecasts, in parcels sent by businesses to customers volumes are set to grow many times faster than in consignments between businesses.

Parcels sent by businesses to private individuals currently make up of 12 percent of parcels handled by DPD Eesti, compared with 20 percent in parcels handled by companies of the DPD group in Europe and 40 percent in the UK.

DPD Eesti gives work to approximately 200 people and has 4,000 contractual clients.

Young Entrepreneurs Create Device for Evaluating Driving Style

ERR - One of the candidates for this year's Ajujaht (Brain Hunt), a competition for innovative startups, is a device that can evaluate people's driving styles.

"The device measures the car’s gravitational force and its turning and tilting angles," Taavi Kikas, one of the creators of MyDriveStyle, told ETV.

“We want to help people save money on their insurance payments, particularly those who for years have practiced a peaceful driving style, yet are forced to pay a higher insurance premium due to the carelessness of others,” said Kikas.

The creators of the technology, which operates on the same principle as the black boxes found in aircraft, are currently seeking to partner up with local insurance companies and eventually enter the international market.

Study: Estonia has high green ICT potential
BNS – On the basis of a study carried out on commission by the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Communications it has appeared that Estonian entrepreneurs are well using information and communication technology (ICT) to make production processes more effective and more environment friendly (green ICT).

Lack of complete solutions was pointed out as the main weakness in case of Estonia. The machines and installations for the application of software developed in Estonia are bought from other countries and complete solutions are not created in cooperation with local IT companies and installation producers, the ministry said.

As a result, the study sees as its biggest challenge in the development of cooperation between entrepreneurs of different spheres.

Proceeding from the above existence of an international cooperation network is of great importance, both for the supply of equipment as well as for the export up modified products. Due to the small size of the Estonian companies international cooperation is often difficult, it appears from the study.

For developing the sphere the study recommends state subsidies for the promotion of Green ICT and for making investments.

Proceeding from the results of the study, the ministry in cooperation with partners and interest groups will start working out a state program.
